King Rehoboam of Israel

Rehoboam the King of Isarel, was the son of King Solomon and grandson of King David. He was born to Naamah, an Ammonite woman. Rehoboam became king at the age of forty-one. Rehoboam ruled Judah for 17 years as a successor to King Solomon

( 2 Chronicles 9:13 & Kings 14:21 ).

Greek-Roboam, English-Rehoboam, Latin-Roboam = ‘an enlarged people’

Grandfather- King David
Father – Solomon
Mother – Naamah
House – House of David
Spouse – Mahalath & Maacah (16 other wives and 60 concubines)
Son – Abijah
Reign – 931 – 913 BCE King of Judah ( 931 BCE King of Israel )

After Rehoboam became the King, a rebellion placed the ten northern tribes under the rule of Jeroboam and left Rehoboam with his own tribe ( Judah ) and the tribe of Benjamin ( 1 King 12:20 ).

Jeroboam started out as a servant of Solomon in charge of forced labour ( 1 Kings 11:28 ). Because of the message of God to Jeroboam through the prophet Ahijah that he would become king, Solomon sought to kill Jeroboam ( 1 Kings 11:29-40 ).

Jeroboam fled from Solomon to Egypt and stayed there until the death of Solomon. Jeroboam returned when Rehoboam went to Shechem to be installed as the king of Israel. Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came to the new king Rehoboam to ask him to lighten the heavy taxes that Solomon laid on them
( 1 Kings 12 : 1-4 & 2 Chronicles 10: 3-4 ).

Rehoboam rejected the counsel of the old men who had attended his father Solomon while he was still alive and consulted with the young men who had grown up with him and now attended him. King answered the people roughly according to young men’s advice ( 1 Kings 12: 8-20 )

Rehoboam deliberately adopted a harsh policy toward the northern tribes. As a result, Israel rebelled against the House of David. K  He sent out Adoniram, in charge of forced labour, but all of Israel stoned him to death ( 1 Kings 12:18 ).

The King managed to escape to Jerusalem. The homeland was split into two hostile kingdoms. This has left the descendants of Solomon with the southern kingdom of Judah. There was continued warfare between Jeroboam and the King throughout Rehoboam’s reign ( 1 Kings 14:30 & 2 Chronicles 12:15 )

And when the King  came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin to fight against the ten tribes of Israel, who sided with Jeroboam to bring the kingdom again to him ( 1 Kings 12:20-21 & 2 Chronicles 10:18 ). But God prevented it through the prophet Shemaiah ( 2 Chronicles 11:1-4 ).

The King dealt wisely, sent some of his sons through all the districts of Judah and Benjamin, fortified the cities, and gave abundant provisions ( 2 Chronicles 11:23 ).

When the King became established in the southern kingdom and grew strong, he abandoned the ways of God. ( 2 Chronicles 12:1 )

Because the King  abandoned God, the word of God came through the prophet Shemaiah that God will abandon him to the king of Egypt Shishak  ( 2 Chronicles 12:5 )

Then the King and officials humbled before God and the word of the Lord came to prophet Shemaiah saying God would not destroy them rather, they would be servants to the King Shishak of Egypt. So that they may know the difference between serving God and serving the kingdoms of other lands ( 2 Chronicles 12:7-8 ).

King Shishak of Egypt took away treasures from Solomon’s temple and the king’s house as well as shields of gold that Solomon had made; Rehoboam replaced them with brass ones. ( 1 Kings 14:26 & 2 Chronicles 12:9 ).

Because Rehoboam humbled himself, the LORD’s anger was turned away, and he did not destroy him completely. There were still some good things in the land of Judah ( 2 Chronicles 12:12 ).
