JESUS IS GREATER THAN JACOB
When Jesus was talking to the Samaritan woman at the well, He said, “Ask me and I will give you living water.
“Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” ( John 4: 10 )
She asked Him, “Are you greater than our father Jacob?
” And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?” ( John 4: 12 )
Jesus answered that if you drink the water Jacob provides, you will be thirsty again. But the water I give, will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” ( John 4: 14 )
When Jacob was dying, he leaned on his staff and blessed each of Joseph’s sons.
It was by faith that Jacob, when he was old and dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons and bowed in worship as he leaned on his staff. ( Hebrews 11: 21 )
In the Old Testament, Jacob, through his faith, received approval from God but did not yet receive what was promised. Those who received what was promised were considered perfect. People who know about the salvation of Christ will receive the great things prepared by God.
All these people earned a good reputation because of their faith, yet none of them received all that God had promised. 40 For God had something better in mind for us, so that they would not reach perfection without us. ( Hebrews 11: 39- 40 )
Because of this, those who died in those days could only go to the abode of the dead.
Then Jacob instructed them, “Soon I will die and join my ancestors. Bury me with my father and grandfather in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite. 30 This is the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in Canaan, that Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite as a permanent burial site. 31 There Abraham and his wife Sarah are buried. There Isaac and his wife, Rebekah, are buried. And there I buried Leah. 32 It is the plot of land and the cave that my grandfather Abraham bought from the Hittites.” 33When Jacob had finished this charge to his sons, he drew his feet into the bed, breathed his last, and joined his ancestors in death. ( Genesis 49: 29 -33 )
As for you, you will die in peace and be buried at a ripe old age. ( Genesis 15: 15 )
But it has been reveal But it has been revealed that Jesus conquered death, rose from the dead, ascended to heaven, and is still alive. Therefore, even though Jacob is considered the father of believers, it is only through Christ that he is perfected. This shows that Christ is greater than Jacob.
