JESUS IS GREATER THAN JOHN THE BAPTIST
Jesus is greater than John the Baptist. Although John was the greatest of those born as men and more significant than any Old Testament prophet, he was the last of the Old Testament prophets.
Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet. 27 John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.’ 28 I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!” ( Luke 7: 26- 28 )

Malachi had prophesied that John the Baptist is the messenger, who came to prepare the way for God.
“Look! I am sending my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. Then the Lord you are seeking will suddenly come to his Temple. The messenger of the covenant, whom you look for so eagerly, is surely coming,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.
( Malachi 3: 1 )
He was a man with the spirit and power of Elijah. He will prepare the people for the Lord’s coming, turn the hearts of fathers back to their children, and help the rebellious accept the wisdom of the godly.
He will be a man with the spirit and power of Elijah. He will prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and he will cause those who are rebellious to accept the wisdom of the godly.”
( Luke 1: 17 )
John never claimed to be greater than Jesus. Instead, he boldly declared that Jesus is greater than he is. John’s words were not just to show his humility; they were the truth.
John announced: “Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals. ( Mark 1: 7 )
John baptized with water, and no other baptism could surpass that. Jesus’ disciples also baptized with water, but Jesus was baptized in a different and the greater way than John. He was baptized with the Holy Spirit.
I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!” ( Mark 1: 8 )
Though Jesus himself didn’t baptize them—his disciples did. ( John 4: 2 )
When God made a promise to Abraham, He swore by Himself because there was no one greater by whom He could swear. And He promised that Abraham’s descendants would increase and be blessed.
For example, there was God’s promise to Abraham. Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in his own name, saying: 14 “I will certainly bless you, and I will multiply your descendants beyond number.” 13 For example, there was God’s promise to Abraham. Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in his own name, saying: 14 “I will certainly bless you, and I will multiply your descendants beyond number.”
( Hebrews 6: 13- 14 )
Similarly, God promised that “the priesthood of Melchizedek would last forever and never pass away”. He made this oath after foreseeing Jesus.
This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. 20 Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek. ( Hebrews 6: 19- 20 )
John’s earthly ministry came to an end, but Jesus’ ministry has no end; it lasts forever. Jesus said, that among those who believe in the salvation of Jesus, John the Baptist is the least.
And Jesus also said, “Truly I say to you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John the Baptist. Yet, in heaven, the least in the kingdom is greater than he”.
“I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he is! ( Matthew 11: 11 )
